Shallotte Shallywags: Brunswick County’s Newest Summer Sensation
SHALLOTTE, N.C.— Brunswick County’s newest collegiate summer baseball team is setting sail in offering fans a mix of competitive play and family-friendly entertainment. The Shallotte Shallywags, one of four expansion teams debuting this year in the Old North State League, are ready to make their mark.
The Shallywags, a collegiate wood-bat baseball team, bring high-energy baseball and a distinctly local flair to Shallotte. Playing their home games at Mike Alderson Field at West Brunswick High School, the team promises to be a summertime staple for sports fans and families.
Players like Ryan Davis, an outfielder from Cleary University, are eager to take the field.
“We’re excited about getting some new crowds and putting up a show for the local community,” Davis said.
More than just a baseball team, the Shallywags aim to deliver an experience. At every home game, assistant general manager Steve Prokop said the team plans to offer a family-friendly “Savannah Bananas-light” atmosphere — energetic, inclusive, and filled with off-field entertainment. That includes music trivia, fan games, and dance groups performing on the field between innings.
Game nights will also feature food trucks, local vendors, giveaways, themed nights, and plenty of opportunities to interact with players and the team’s pirate-themed mascot, Shmee.
The roster features college players from across the country, including nine from nearby Brunswick Community College. Two players are currently in the NCAA transfer portal. For many, it’s a chance to develop skills, bond with teammates, especially those from different backgrounds and campuses, and enjoy the summer game.
“Other college guys get to get together for the summer and play altogether,” says Eli Bodine, a pitcher from Southeastern Community College, “We’re expecting to win a lot and have tons of fun.”
Playing alongside familiar faces is a bonus for players like Ryan Seagroves, a utility player from Brunswick Community College.
“We still get to build that chemistry with each other for next year since all of us are coming back”, said utility player Ryan Seagroves, referring to his teammates from college.
The team also includes hometown talent. Pitchers Landon Everhart, Zach Steagall, and Gabe Abbot — all graduates of West Brunswick High School — are returning to play on the same field where they once competed as high schoolers.
“It’s awesome to see how far we've come, and how much growth we've all had over the past two years to come back here,” Everhart said.
The Shallywags are part of a 24-team league that continues to expand across North Carolina. The league provides a platform for college players to sharpen their skills during the summer while connecting with local communities.
For pitchers like Chapel Conway of Southeastern Community College, the goal is simple.
“My goal this summer is just to stay in the strike zone and make the hitter swing,” Conway said. “I want them to get in the box and expect a strike — and they swing, get out, or hit it to one of the guys that can make a play.”
And it’s not just pitching and defense that players are working to improve. Catcher Nikita Sutherland, from Southeastern Community College, said his focus on offense is “consistency and getting my timing down.” Sutherland said.
The Shallywags also offer ways for the community to get involved. Locals can become host families, volunteer at games, or partner with the team through sponsorships. Each host family receives two free season tickets per player housed.
The season runs from June 4 to July 19, with fifteen home games scheduled throughout the regular season. General admission tickets are $10.
Starting Wednesday, June 4, every home game will begin at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 6 p.m. For the first game, against the Hope Mills Rockfish, Shallotte Mayor Walt Eccard will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
Whether you're a longtime baseball fan or just looking for a new way to enjoy a summer night, the Shallywags are ready to welcome you aboard.
