Shallywags Prepare for Doubleheader After Busy Weekend
SHALLOTTE, N.C—After taking two of three games on the road, the Shallotte Shallywags sit at 5–3 and look to build momentum heading into their first doubleheader ever in team history this Wednesday, June 18, against the Hope Mills Rockfish at home.
Following a 17–9 loss at home to the Oak Island Loggerheads on June 11, the Shallywags bounced back with a thrilling 16–15 extra-inning win over the Laurinburg Highland Hooligans on the road at Legion Park. Shallotte built a six-run lead in the sixth inning, only to see Laurinburg claw back to tie the game. Trey Pierce went 4-for-4, and Ryan Yaroshuk delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the 10th. The Shallywags pounded out 17 hits, drew 13 walks, and got 2.2 scoreless innings of relief from Brent Avery to seal the win.
On Saturday, June 14, Shallotte edged the Sandhills Bogeys 4–2 at Dempsey Diamond in Pinehurst. Michael Royston’s go-ahead RBI single in the sixth proved to be the difference, while starter Dawson Ables struck out three over three innings. Ryder Whitacre delivered 3.2 no-hit innings in relief to lock down the victory. Branton Jernigan added two hits and an RBI as the Shallywags improved to 5–2.
However, the weekend ended on a sour note with a 19–4 loss to cross-county rival Oak Island on Sunday at Bill Smith Park. The Loggerheads exploded for 11 runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Mason Hughes, before the game was called after seven innings due to inclement weather.
The Shallywags’ originally scheduled matchup against Hope Mills on Friday, June 13, was postponed due to rain, setting up Wednesday’s doubleheader at Mike Alderson Field. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 4 p.m., with Game 2 to follow roughly 30 minutes after the opener. Both games will be seven innings.
Shallotte edged Hope Mills 9–8 on Opening Day, and the rematch promises plenty of action as the Shallywags look to climb the standings in the Old North State League’s Coastal Division.
Tickets are $10 and available at the gate or online at www.shallotteshallywags.com. Both games will be streamed live on the Foul Pole Sports Network at fpsn.watch.
